Re-imagining an Aussie 26er as a practical Klunker

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

I started with a steel repco frame, donated by a good mate. The Chromoly Tange tubed Repco Mammoth is rigid MTB.

An now defunct Australian bicycle manufacturer,

Repco (Replacement Parts Company) cycles was founded in 1922 by Robert Geoffrey Russell in Collingwood, Victoria (VIC) and originally focused on the manufacture of automotive parts which later branched into manufacture of cycles along the way. Made in Japan for the Aussie market a few still can seen on our streets.

The addition of the Wald 137 front basket , makes carrying your groceries or few cheeky beers a breeze. A fresh set of Maaxis DTH for style and good rolling characteristics on our somewhat sketchy Melbourne roads coupled with a Dutch frame lock, which sadly is a rarity here. The single piece crank had to be replaced with a 1x chaining to bring this 70's rocker up to date and still as cool as Iggy Pop.

I'm a big fan of the early Klunker bikes. Before my time entering this earth, this awesome bike came about. A Klunker is a type of mountain bike that was popular in the 1970s. The term "klunker" is often used to describe any old or inexpensive mountain bike, but it originally referred to a specific type of bike that was built from spare parts and used for off-road riding.

Klunkers were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Marin County, California, by a group of mountain bikers who wanted to ride off-road but didn't have the money to buy expensive, specialized mountain bikes. They built their own bikes using old cruiser frames, balloon tires, and other spare parts that were readily available at the time. These bikes were called "klunkers" because of the sound they made when ridden over rough terrain.

Klunkers became popular in the 1970s and were the precursors to modern mountain bikes. They were used for off-road riding, but they were not as efficient or as durable as modern mountain bikes, which are built specifically for off-road use. Despite their limitations, klunkers were popular because they were cheap and easy to build, and they allowed people to ride off-road on a budget.

This modern , may bring back some nostalgia trip and allow you to do your grocery run in style.

I'll be working on more of these builds!
